Nightlife

Cologne is more than 2000 years old yet the metropolis on the Rhine has remained young.

The nightlife in Cologne is pulsating and with more than 70 clubs and party hot spots it offers something for everybody, from jazz, reggae and R&B to techno. The countless bars, restaurants and brewhouses also invite visitors to party. No other German city has as many pubs per capita as Cologne.

The main areas for nightlife are the Old Town, the Kwartier Latäng (Cologne's student quarter) around the Zülpicher and Luxemburger Straße, the Friesen Quarter around Friesenplatz, the Südstadt around Chlodwigplatz and Alteburger Straße, the fashionable Belgian Quarter, the original kölsche "Vringsveedel" (Severin Quarter), which is mentioned in the songs of BAP and Bläck Fööss, the Ringe and the new multicultural trendy quarter of Ehrenfeld.

Cologne Cathedral:  The city's landmark

Cologne cathedral with its two spires mounting up to 157 meters each, has been the city's most famous landmark for centuries and the most well-known architectural monument in Germany. It took 632 years until the construction of the largest German cathedral was completed. Having laid the foundation in 1248 and making rapid progress initially, construction work gradually came to a standstill. It was only due to 19th century Romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages and the commitment of the Prussian Court that construction work resumed in 1842. In 1880, the completion of the cathedral was celebrated as a national event. The relics of the Holy Epiphany found their last resting place in the cathedral. The Sarcophagus of Epiphany (dating from the 13th century) surpasses all comparable golden sarcophagi in Western Christendom concerning scale and magnificence. Other outstanding works of art are to be found in the cathedral treasure chamber.
